In the book Prisoner B-3087, Yanek is the main character. Yanek endured a lot during the Holocaust. He survived the Nazis, Concentration camps, and the Ghetto. The worst thing he had to endure was his time in Birkenau.
The Nazis had so many plans for the Jews, and Yanek had to deal with a lot of them, especially in Birkenau. In Birkenau Yanek had to get a tattoo with the numbers B-3087. This tattoo could easily get infected. The Nazis forcefully tattooed his arm. He was left with a permanent mark on him reminding him of this terrible time.
Another reason that Birkenau was the worst place to be was because Yanek believed he was about to die. He went into a gas chamber and expected death, and out came water. He begged for death and laughed at their hesitation, but death never came to greet him. A sense of realisation swept over him, and he realized he was going to live.
The last reason Birkenau was the worst was because Yanek had to watch as hundreds of corpses piled on top each other, with bullets piercing threw their weak fattless flesh. He again was at death’s doorstep, preparing to greet her but this time he didn’t nock. He was spared once again, but had this terrible memory stuck in the impenetrable box he called his brain. Then he had to get back to his torturess labor.
Finally he left Birkenau, but just to go to another camp. His story made me depressed and feel really terrible inside. It made me realize there was more to the Holocaust then just death.
